Montgomery County’s #1 Choice For Music Lessons

Master Classes for the Advanced Musician

Master classes are designed to teach specific techniques and styles or otherwise impart specific knowledge to advanced musicians who want to take their playing to the next level, but who may not be in the position to study on an every week basis.  High intermediate to Advanced players will benefit from the Master Classes, though some of the material will no doubt be a stretch.  Our staff of exceptional teachers has by design a diverse background in music and areas of specialty at which we truly excel.  We’d love to share that knowledge with you in our Master Class setting.
Master Classes will meet for two, one hour sessions, one week apart.  We will run the class with a minimum of two and a maximum of eight students.  The cost per student for the two hours of instruction and materials provided is $100.00.  To reserve a slot in one of our Master Classes, complete the form at the bottom of this page, including the YELLOW code from the end of the class description.  Because space is limited, preregistration and prepayment for the class is required.  Payment should be made using the Master Class button at the bottom of our “Make a Payment” page.  Upon receipt of your registration and payment, we will send you a confirmation email.

Alternate Tunings for Guitar with Geoff Hansplant
The fretboard of the guitar is a sonic landscape and, in one sense, a guitar piece or solo is a path leading from here to there across that landscape.  One of the really magical aspects of the guitar, and the thing that makes it truly impossible to ever really master the instrument, is that all you need to do is to retune from standard tuning into one of hundreds of alternate tunings, and the landscape becomes foreign and the pathways unfamiliar.  It can be a daunting process to rethink how to play the instrument, but for the creative player, it is also a liberating experience, taking you out of familiar patterns and harmonies and into the unknown.
In this Master Class, Geoff Hansplant will take students on a journey into a number of alternate tunings and demonstrate not only how to navigate the fretboard, but how to start rethinking harmony and dissonance in the context of creating music within an alternate sonic landscape.  By coming to a better understanding of what it is that various alternate tunings share with standard tuning, we can also come to see how what we already know about playing the guitar can be translated into a new set of sounds.

Geoff Hansplant is the owner of the Cappella School of Music and has been playing the guitar for close to 40 years.  In 2013, he had the great good fortune to study with both Richard Thompson and Martin Simpson.  He has released two albums internationally, each of which incorporates a great deal of playing in alternate tunings.  His first album, Pilgrim’s Progress (2011) received extensive airplay in Europe and his second (recorded with the band, Dirt Track Racer), Kick Off Your Muddy Boots (2014) spent two weeks at #4 in the USA on the national Roots Music Charts.  In March, 2015, Kick Off Your Muddy Boots was named Americana Album of the Month by The Akademia Music Awards.  The band is currently in pre-production for the recording of their second album.
The Master Class in Alternate Tunings for Guitar is set for Saturday, October 1st and 15th, from 10:00 -11:00a.m.  To register for this class, complete and send the registration form at the bottom of this page, being sure to copy and paste the following code:  ATG100116.
